It had been months since Liberation (2005) was released and I hadn't made a thing, and so when this rolled out, the demo was named "Cold Spell".
After piddling with the baby grand in Studio A, this riff jumped out at me, so I tracked it to a click. The album version includes my footsteps walking out to the bench after hitting 'record' from within the control room. It's the little things.
The drums were a lot of fun. The final version is layered with 4 different sets. The live kit sounded shitty so I re-miked it through a Marshall stack, which did really cool things.
A lot of time was spent tempo mapping the ending so the vamp could roll into some crazy electronic interlude, but that didn't mesh with the album. So I cannibalized the interlude and re-purposed various instruments within the hook section. I think it was supposed to be that way.
